Main Jail Release Destinations
The Harrison County Sheriff's Office operates the Main Jail as the primary intake and processing facility for men and women. County custody can end through bond, time served, sentence satisfaction, dismissal with no remaining hold, or another court-authorized discharge. Those events may lead to the community. The same jail departure can instead reflect transfer to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody. Hospital movement, extradition, escape, and death are also not ordinary releases.
Ask one precise question: “Released to whom?” The Sheriff's booking and release transaction should give the effective date, authority, and destination if those fields are maintained. A court docket can explain bond, judgment, dismissal, sentence credit, or commitment, but a signed order is not proof of the exact time someone walked out. When another agency received the person, confirm arrival in that agency's system after allowing time for intake.
A person who leaves the Main Jail may remain in custody. Confirm the destination before treating roster removal as community release.
Confirm Main Jail Release Records
Start with the official Harrison County Jailing Search. It is a booking search, not a promised archive of released people. Search the exact name and reasonable spelling variants. Save the booking number, charge, cause number, bond entry, and any release information shown. If the record is absent or unclear, call the Main Jail and ask for the release or transfer date, time, authority, and destination.
- Check the official county search for the correct booking.
- Call jail administration and distinguish release from transfer.
- Use the cause number in the District Clerk or County Clerk court record.
- Request the booking and release transaction when online details are incomplete.
- Search TDCJ, BOP, or ICE only after the custody path points there.
The complete county search and records path is described on the Harrison County released inmates home page. A current roster is useful for present custody. It cannot replace a dated release record for someone who has already left.
Main Jail Records Request
The Sheriff's Open Records Request form has check boxes for incident, arrest, and accident records, but no release-record box. Describe the requested item in plain terms. Ask for the release sheet, jail card, booking history, release date and time, release type or authority, destination or receiving agency, and booking photograph as needed. Include the exact name, booking date, booking number, cause number, and a copy of identification where the form calls for it.
| Form item | Published term |
|---|---|
| Paper copies | $0.10 per page |
| Work over one hour | $15 per hour plus 20% overhead |
| Processing statement | Reviewed and processed within ten days |
Those are the form's stated terms, not a promise that every request will cost the same or arrive on a fixed date. Texas Government Code Chapter 552 governs public-information access, subject to lawful exceptions. Expunction, juvenile confidentiality, active-case issues, and other rules can limit what is released.

Main Jail Processing Role
The county says the Main Jail opened in 1993 as a 96-bed building connected by elevator to the former courthouse-floor jail. The combined arrangement was described as about 150 beds before the Annex was added. Capacity is historical context, not a live population count. It also explains why a change of building can be mistaken for release.
The Main Jail's processing role makes it the strongest source for an Annex departure too. It does not prove that every person physically exits through this building. No official source states public release hours, an exit door, a family waiting area, weekend practice, or a property-return procedure. Call before traveling or arranging pickup.
Main Jail Release-Time Verification
The Main Jail's processing role supports a careful same-day check, but it does not support guessing a public release schedule. Harrison County has not published standard release hours, a weekend timetable, a designated family waiting place, or the door used for discharge. It has also not published a property-return procedure. A court event, bond approval, or completed sentence can explain why release should occur, yet none supplies the final physical-exit time.
Call the Main Jail with the exact name and any booking or cause number. Ask whether release processing is complete, whether another hold remains, and whether the transaction records a community destination or a receiving agency. If staff confirm transfer, record the agency name and effective date before moving to the next locator. If the answer is only that the person is no longer present, ask which maintained jail record documents the departure.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Did county custody end? | Separates a legal release from movement inside the two-building jail system |
| What is the effective date and time? | Provides a dated event instead of an undated absence |
| What authority appears? | Connects bond, court action, sentence satisfaction, or transfer to the transaction |
| Is a destination recorded? | Shows whether the next step was the community or another custodian |
Family members should not travel based on a portal disappearance or assume the Main Jail has a public pickup point. The supported course is to confirm status and instructions by phone. When an exact time or destination remains disputed, request the existing release sheet or jail card rather than asking staff to reconstruct events from memory.
Harrison Jail History and Releases
Harrison County's jail history spans the former courthouse jail, the 1993 Main Jail, and the later Travis Street Annex. These are stages in one county system, not separate databases. The Annex opened to add male overflow space, while the Main Jail remained the stated intake and processing location. A person can therefore move between county buildings without any legal release.
That local design changes the verification method. The Annex can confirm present housing, but Main Jail staff should be asked about the final transaction. Transport & Warrants is useful when an onward move is suspected. Court records then show the legal event, and the receiving system confirms continued custody. The official Sheriff jail overview is the source for the buildings' roles and contacts.
Federal Prisoners at Main Jail
Commissioners Court minutes approved July 1, 2025 documented 33 U.S. Marshals prisoners during a recent reporting period. That dated count is not an annual statistic and does not create a separate federal facility. It establishes that a federal prisoner may be physically held in Harrison County while remaining in the federal custody chain.
A USMS detainee leaving the Main Jail may go to court, another contract jail, BOP custody, ICE custody, or a court-authorized community release. The county roster cannot settle the federal result. Use the federal docket or clerk for the court action. BOP data becomes useful if the person enters its system, but “not in BOP custody” does not mean free. It can mean another sovereign holds the person or that the record is not found.
Main Jail Transfer Checks
When the Sheriff reports commitment to state prison, use the TDCJ offender search after intake. TDCJ is not the correct system for a person who merely bonded out and never entered state custody. Its detail record may show the TDCJ number, identity, conviction county, offenses, location, maximum sentence date, projected release date, and parole-review information. Older discharged people may require TDCJ's email, phone, or public-information channel.
A federal transfer belongs in the BOP or federal-court path. Possible immigration custody belongs in ICE's detainee locator. A transfer on another county's warrant must be confirmed with that county. Each search covers only its own custody. Failure to find the person in one system proves no more than lack of visibility there under the details supplied.
The official TDCJ unit directory provides a visual checkpoint for the state-facility transfer route.
This directory is for identifying a state destination after transfer, not for confirming a community release from Harrison County Main Jail.
Texas IVSS-Counties can add custody-change alerts for a named county prisoner. It replaced legacy VINE terminology in Texas, but it does not become the official jail record. A transmitted event may also lack the authority or destination needed to distinguish bond from transfer. Keep the alert, Sheriff transaction, and court disposition in their proper roles.
For a same-day question, record when each source was checked. Jail processing, transport, and receiving-agency intake do not update every system at the same moment. A dated answer from jail administration is more useful than an undated statement that a person is not there. If the destination remains unclear, request the existing transaction rather than asking staff to create a new analysis.
- Release
- County custody ends, possibly to the community.
- Transfer
- One custodian ends control as another begins it.
- Discharge
- A sentence or supervision term fully ends.
- Detainer
- A request or hold that can direct the next custody step.
